I’m very proud of myself. Where other people with my reputation to get into trouble get into the national newspaper if they are wanted, I got into this newspaper in positive way. Remember in one of my last posts that I told you that there was a reporter from the Post courier during the open day? I can now tell you that it got printed and that I got from it what I wanted from it. Which is NOT that I wanted my face in the newspaper, as some of you might be tempted to think. No, it’s to have a general good feeling about this open day and have the feeling that it was a success. To prove to you that the open day was a success I made this addition for you.

A good thing is that there was a newspaper article about physiotherapy in PNG.
A bad thing is that the article didn’t talk about physiotherapy in general.
A good thing is that they quoted me only once and gave the credit to a local colleague.
A bad thing is that I didn’t prepare a press release.
A good thing would have been if I had prepared a press release.
A good thing is that I now have the experience that a press release works better.
A bad thing is that I said far more interesting stuff than the line being quoted.
A good thing is that everybody thought it was a very successful day, from hospital staff to the management.
A bad thing is that only two doctors showed up in hospital that has enough doctors to serve 7 wards.
A good thing is that I feel that the physio team works closer together now.
A good thing is that we had a lot of delicious food to eat after the open day.

Now let’s add this up and see what comes out. I count 3 more good things. I’m not very good in mental arithmetic, but I think this counts as a positive day.
It’s now time to reveal the article, because I don’t think they sell any PNG newspapers in the Netherlands.

Maybe this gives an idea of the fun of your work in PNG: apparently physiotherapy is that immature (in a professional sense) that the newspaper spends an article on it. I can imagine one’s gonna have a hard time trying to get that kind of media attention in the Netherlands.

, maar weet je, volgens mij kan je er wel vanuit gaan dat het allemaal goed gegaan is als je gevoel dat zegt… daar hoef je geen plusjes- en minnetjeslijst van te maken! Wel erg goed dat er op deze manier toch weer even een berichtje is over dat ‘ onbekende’ fysio.. alleen dat is al geweldig, toch!?

Wat leuk Sjoerd, zo’n succes! Had dat nog nooit iemand verzonnen, een open dag? Was het jouw idee trouwens of was het al pratend met je groep mensen zo gegroeid, van het een komt het ander? Met de beste ideeën gaat dat meestal zo. Geniet ervan.
Wat de bilums betreft denk ik dat ik maar zorg voor veel plaats in mijn rugzak zodat ik wat kan meenemen, als ik ze tenminste uit mag voeren. Ik wil er wel een paar hebben.
Over goedkoop telefoneren via de computer had ik al van Leonie gehoord. Haar John was weken in Colombia om een adoptiekind op te halen. Zij hadden telefonisch contact via de computer. Ik kan me er eens in verdiepen. Moet bij ons ook mogelijk zijn. Hoewel, wij zijn nooit zo bellerig geweest. En het contact zo bevalt mij eigenlijk best goed, eerlijk gezegd.

Het is altijd moeilijk om mensen zover te krijgen je vragen te beantwoorden. PNG-ers vertellen zelf niks over een onderwerp. Je moet het eruit trekken. Dus ik weet niet of iemand dat al eerder bedacht had. Volgens mij had een van de vorige fysio’s een radiobericht gedaan.
Bilums kan je gewoon uitvoeren, mits er geen haren van dieren in verwerkt zijn hoor ik. En dat is af en toe zo. Maar goed, daar verzinnen we dan ook wel weer een oplossing voor.
En bellen gaat niet zo maar via internet hier. Maar goed ook. Ik geloof dat er iets van de charme van mijn verblijf hier af zou gaan als dat wel zomaar ging
