I have to say that last week was a busy week. My last update I did in Wewak. But I didn’t talk about Wewak yet. So let’s start with that.
Wewak was for me to experience another working situation. I think I explained before that VSO gives their volunteers the opportunity to go on a jobswap to other departments. So I teamed up with Karin Schepman to see what she is doing. Currently she is working in the hospital of Wewak and she is training CBR trainers.
I had a look at the physiotherapy department and I had to say that I found it very cosy. I tried on one of their uniforms. Because Wewak is a coastal it’s hot and let me tell you; a uniform makes it really hot.
CBR volunteers are working in the remote villages and need a wide set of skills. One of them is to recognise wether or not a newborn has everything attached to it. So in order for them to understand it we had class together with a paediatrician. He explained us how to examine a baby.
Of course I had some free time as well and Karin took me around Wewak to see a war memorial. The Japanese had made a stronghold on top of a hill overseeing Wewak. They had left a machinegun, so I decided to attack the town and make it mine. It was the next step in my plan for conquering the world.
I also made a panorama view of Wewak, click here to download it. It’s too wide to paste it here.
I got to meet her family. I was surprised to see she has two white “cheese heads”.
Poor kids when first coming to PNG they must have had a hell of time with the PNG people. Two white young male kids with white hair. Ay, I can just imagine it.
Another big thing was that I went with Karin and her CBR class to a community to do awareness on disability for a school. Really nice to see how this awareness was done.
I was only three days in Wewak, so on Wednesday I went to Madang. On Thursday the workshop started in a very fancy conference room.
Two days filled up with a lot of subjects on disability. Because it’s so expensive to get all the physiotherapists in one place you want to talk and discuss about everything that has to be done in physiotherapy.
So then I came back to Mt. Hagen in the morning and in the afternoon…..
