You have seen this picture before. It is the workshop for NOPS. NOPS stands for National Orthetic and Prosthetic Service. The second volunteer (I’m the fourth in Hagen) started the preparations to get a workshop here. Now it has finally happened. When we started renovations of this workshop in November 2006 fences were placed around the premises.
Last week two NOPS colleagues started the work again and we the physiotherapy department staff are very exited. In January 2006 we started a wheelchair service and now we are starting an orthetic and prosthetic service.
Let’s have some pictures of the start.
On Monday (16-4-2007) the workshop inside looked like this.
We cleaned it up and bought a lot of stuff to improve the workshop. So on Wednesday (18-4-2007) it looked like this.
We also stacked the stuff in the little office at the back of the workshop. It’s the blue door at the back of the last two pictures.
At the back of the workshop is a house that the technicians will use for accommodation. This house also needs some work on the outside (16-4-2007).
The backside looks like this.
Inside seems to be ok.
For the last two days (24-4-2007) the rooms in the house at the back of the workshop have been painted. The motto here is pretty blue isn’t ugly. The rooms in the house look like this now.
The bathroom is small and dark, but I tried to take a picture anyhow.
Even the kitchen is now “heavenly” blue.
The house has been painted on the outside (27-4-2007)
The doors have been painted pink.
The workshop is being given a white coat before other paint is going to be applied (3-5-2007).
The workshop and the house got a green coating this week (18-5-2007).
In the week of 21st to the 25th of May we had our last NOPS clinic in Mount Hagen.
Today (29-5-2007) preparations were started to repair the workshop’s concrete floor.
Outside the foundation of the workshop is going to be extended outwards a little for more support.
The wall is being removed to place frames for windows (30-5-2007).
One frame has been placed and a new part is being broken out for another window (31-5-2007).
On the other side the wall is also being broken away to make room for a new frame.
Three frames placed (1-6-2007).
Soft board plates are fixed to the walls.
The walls were finished yesterday and the place is cleaned out (5-6-2007). I downsized the picture because it’s a panorama.
Outside the foundation is being reinforced with another layer of concrete.
The rest of the foundation has been reinforced (21-6-2007)
The holes in the floor of the workshop have been filled and the walls have been painted white.
Because the fence did not come all the way down ground level was raised in order to fill up the space between the fence and the soil.
Inside the workshop the walls have been painted blue (2-7-2007)
The gardens have been tended to.
