This story is going to be a little of everything so pay close attention.
I had a very strange weekend this weekend. First on Friday Mt. Hagen town was like a war zone. I was with Joanna and her neighbours, when a big noise erupted from town. I have to say that Joanna lives in town, so it was very close. It’s amazing how fast news travels within PNG. People seem to know what has happened in a certain situation before you get time to actually witness it. Two rivaling clans seemed to have picked town to quarrel. Stones were flying around for almost two hours, before the police ended it with teargas. The weird thing is that people say you can stand next to the fight and look, which a lot of people do. It is said that the clans fighting know exactly who their enemies are. It is even said that the clans like it when people look so they can display their strength and other clans wont be tempted to attack them. I’m reluctant to find out ![]()
In the evening two security guards picked me up and one of them was hit by tear gas while keeping looters from their employer’s premises. Afterwards I heard that at 1.20am they were shooting it out in town. I live on the outskirts of town so I didn’t hear it. On Saterday I have been picking flowers in my garden and I was astound to see the multitude of colours, size and scent.
Since I was in a photographing mood I photographed the growth of my spider. Unfortunately he moved and I couldn’t find him for a while, until yesterday. It’s still a young one. Deer doctor Kaupa told me that they actually eat the spiders. I already learned to eat the head of a chicken, it’s legs and it’s intestines, but spiders is a bit to much still. Maybe in a year or so I’ll try it. Same thing with a gourd actually, I haven’t tried one yet
After this nice morning together with my neighbours I went to my southern highlands family. I posted a picture before, but just to remember you I’ll post the picture again.
I killed two chickens for them and we had a nice diner with the entire family. And afterwards we had to take a detour, because we received word that a fight broke out at the market, which is on the way to my house. I checked with my family to ask them if the violence was getting worse, but they said that it was normal. Ol hilans lain en lain bilong fait. People from the highlands love to fight.
Now I’m going to jump to today. Today an English prof came over to Hagen and did a presentation on fractures. During this presentation I took the liberty to photograph my rescuer in dire need, dr. Magdalyne (Maggie) Kaupa. She was the one who gave me my much needed IV drip and put me on less aggressive medication. I shall be grateful to her all my live.
I’m going to end my story with the announcement that I’m going to have my first kickboxing lesson today. I’m very exited to see how I like it. I never did any martial art where there was full contact.
