Sander has started his own brewery. It is called the Oersoep brouwerij (primeval soup brewery). I have been tasting his beer ever since he started. Over a few years time the tastes of his beer have been evolving to a point where they can compete and come out victorious over any commercial beer around. Think of a taste and Sander has made a beer out of it; coffee, pepper, chanterelle or mattee (Argentinian tea). Next to this he explorers beers like porters, IPA’s and stout’s to find things he can include into his beer.

I bought a bike carrier for the occasion.

Awesome, because you don’t need a tow bar on your car. You can fixate it on the back cover of your car.

Here you can see it through my rear window. There is a face in the way. Just imagine it not being there… ;)

Being a fan of special Belgium beers I decided to join. We visited two breweries.

The Carolus brewery
The Carolus brewery clearly was the more commercial of the two. It had a nice tour, there was a hotel, there were the old copper kettles, basically it looked it’s part. The beer tasted nice. Unfortunately I had to drive so I only tasted a sip.

The Boon brewery
At the Boon brewery we saw a “modern” facility at work. I was kind of dirty, full of moulds and spider cobs. Apparently it’s good for the beer that is in the process of fermentation. A famous beer that’s being brewed here is called gueuze. It’s too sour for my taste, but it’s supposed to be an acquired taste.

We ended the tour in Leuven, where we stayed over at another friends place. Back home I restocked my wine crates (used to be from Maaike) with special beers.

‘][‘ has a new baby called Jimmy. I have it from a reliable source that one is busy, especially when it’s the second child. I’m busy with work and studies. In short, when we want to see each other we play therapeutic chess. Due to the amount of talking we only play one game. As you can see in the pictures it’s obviously who has won.

So I took some of them to the beautiful south. As my parents have a nice big house with a nice big (read huge to Dutch understanding) garden my friends were thoroughly impressed. In the absence of a barbecue we dug a pit, put four poles around and stuck some chicken wire on it. Et voila, a good way to char the meat.
The next morning we went site seeing in a graveyard in Roermond and we took a walk in the forest near my parents house.
